A GROSS MARGIN COMPARISON OF RETURNS TO NEMATICIDE TREATMENT IN CONTINUOUS AND ROTATION TRITICALE-SOYBEAN PRODUCTION AgEcon

A study of irrigated strip-till soybean production compared gross margins over nematicide expense for a continuous triticale-soybean system versus a two-year rotation system alternating triticale-soybean with triticale-cotton. Half of the replicated plots under each system received nematicide treatment. Gross margins were calculated using recorded yields and Georgia average market prices by marketing years. Mean gross margins for untreated plots were not significantly different between crop-sequence systems. Within each system, however, mean gross margins were significantly higher for plots not receiving nematicide treatment versus treated plots, even when treated plots produced greater yields.

Economic Comparisons of Alternative and Conventional Production Technologies for Eggplant in Southern Georgia AgEcon

Environmental concerns about pesticide usage in traditional production systems are prompting vegetable producers to consider alternative systems. Research results from a multi-year study on eggplant in southern Georgia compare two alternative production technologies to the conventional rye cover crop technology. Alternative technologies utilize beneficial insect principles as substitutes for conventional pesticide controls. Using field data, eggplant production budgets are developed to generate net return estimates under each system. Cost reductions achieved by using alternative technologies are not sufficient to offset the reduced yields and returns generated from these technologies. Economically Efficient Cow Size Selection Using the Product/Product Model AgEcon

Economically optimal cow size is examined using a two product production framework with a single allocatable factor. Auction price data is used to construct a Total Revenue Curve for sales of small and large calves. A Production Possibilities Curve is constructed for a farmer with 100 animal units of resources. Results show that smaller calves are the solution regardless of calving season or market location.

Searching for the Golden Grail: An Optimal Soybean Marketing Frequency Strategy AgEcon

Gross revenue from marketing frequency strategies varies with average soybean prices across time periods. A study examined statistical differences among trading days using a four-year database of cash prices. Results applied to a hypothetical Arkansas soybean farm using four strategies over four years revealed the optimal gross revenue marketing strategy.

Seasonal Price Patterns for Arkansas Soybeans AgEcon

Seasonality is generally regarded as a major feature in soybean market price variations. Recent years in Arkansas have seen considerable construction of on-farm storage, a move that could mitigate the seasonality effect on price variations. A study comparing cash price indices from the past ten years with results from a 1986 Arkansas study and a recent national-level study found that Arkansas soybean prices appear to have followed a consistent and logical pattern around their national average in spite of increased variability and uncertainty.
